In 2017 Bill Seaward was researching online knowledge transmission while completing a master’s in applied economics at the University of Waterloo, Ontario Canada. This research developed into a set of technologies for community-based knowledge solutions using the notation and markup of posts, and was awarded funding from the University of Waterloo and the Accelerator Centre technology incubator in 2020. Over the course of a year with the Accelerator Centre’s Jumpstart incubator program, the initial platform evolved into something bigger. LiveVybe is designed to solve more than just online knowledge quality and hyper partisanship. More importantly, it is focused on improving the social-emotional experience of the digital community.

LiveVybe reproduces digitally, the depth and breadth of "vibes" in real life. A Vybe is a new way of thinking about how we tag, itemize, and search items on a network, which could include people, places, events, groups, and other things. It’s meant to get to the heart of the attributes that people really care about in their real-world relationships: mood, style, attitude, interests, character traits, and personal outcomes. People casually use the term Vibe, to refer to combinations of these elements every day because it effectively conveys a great deal of meaning and value. Through the concept of a “Vybe” LiveVybe translates this meaning and value into a digital community. LiveVybe allows items on the network to be tagged with the Vybe attributes above and lets users engage across these attributes, between each other and any other item on the network, like events. While each of these attributes are their own individual indexable labels, they are packaged into the concept of a “Vybe” across the network. So, to put it more simply, everything has Vybes associated with it, and Vybes breakdown into moods, styles, attitudes, Interests, character traits, and tagged personal outcomes, which is exactly how the concept breaks down in real-world usage. ,

LiveVybe's founding White Paper makes the case that the current paradigm in mainstream tech; of modeling a user’s personality and desires behind the scenes and feeding their first order desires back to them is a constraint on the user’s freewill, or at least on their self determination. By limiting our ability to express second order desires, and more generally tell the algorithm who we are and what we explicitly want, our full identity and range of desires are not considered in determining what recommendations are offered to us. This creates an unnatural feedback loop of interests that we may not otherwise pursue, or might otherwise pursue less, if we could report these deeper and broader desires to the algorithm. LiveVybe fixes these problems by allowing users to explicitly report the full range of their desires, goals, and interests to the recommendation algorithm. Yes, LiveVybe uses machine learning but in a more limited fashion than the old social media platforms. Unlike, the other platforms, that we all know and don't really like, LiveVybe does not model your personality without your input. In LiveVybe you can train the algorithm to be a better match to your deepest desires, effectively putting the machine learning framework to work for the real you. Machine learning is also used to help recommend content matched to promote the goals and moods you want to achieve in your filters. Again, it does this in the explicit service to you, the user, which is very much unlike any of the existing platforms.
